Life is a journey we do not travel alone; we share it with family, friends, neighbours, and our community – with God by our side.

Along the way, there are moments of special significance – the celebration of a wedding, the christening or baptism of a loved one, or a funeral to honour and give thanks for a life.

At Arnside Methodist Church, we’re here to support you in marking these meaningful milestones, walking alongside you with faith and fellowship.

Baptism (Christening)

Baptism (also known as christening) is the sign of a decision to follow Jesus in the journey of faith. By doing so, the person being baptised joins God’s community, the church. Parents often bring young children to be baptised, but young people and adults of any age can also be baptised.

It is also possible to arrange a service of thanksgiving/dedication following the birth of a child.

is a beautiful, personal and spiritual commitment. Whether you’re planning a traditional ceremony or something more personal, we offer a warm and welcoming space where your love can be celebrated.

Funerals

A funeral marks the end of a human life on earth. It is an opportunity for friends and family to express their sense of grief and loss, to give thanks for the life that has ended and to commend that person to God’s safe-keeping.

For more information please contact our minister directly, or contact your chosen Funeral Director, which in the first instance will contact our minster on your behalf.

For services which take place at a crematorium a Memorial Service can be arranged in church.

Confirmation

It is important to recognise publicly a growth in your maturity as a committed Christian, and to witness to your faith, and for that to be affirmed. Confirmation does that and many denominations offer this rite.

Confirmation is when you publicly confirm the promises that you made, or were made on your behalf (if you were baptised as a baby). In the service the minister lays his/her hands on your head and says ‘Lord, confirm [strengthen] your servant (your name) by your Holy Spirit that she/he may continue yours for ever.’

Membership

Becoming a ‘member’ is a way of saying that you belong to and support your local Methodist Church and that you want to do this.

Being ‘received into membership’ means that you are welcomed into a particular Methodist church which can support you in your discipleship and where you can support others. In the service, the minister welcomes you into membership saying: ‘We receive and welcome you as members of the Methodist Church, and of the church in this place.’
